China to expand investment options for yuan
HONG KONG, Aug 17 (Reuters) - China pushed for greater international use of the yuan on Wednesday by promising to let foreign investors buy mainland shares and bonds, pushing up shares of brokerage stocks listed in Hong Kong.
The plans, among a string of others unveiled by China Vice Premier Li Keqiang, underscored Beijing's intent to propel explosive growth in the Hong Kong offshore yuan market and turn the yuan, or renminbi, into a widely-traded currency one day.
In a sign of Beijing's patent currency ambitions, it also concluded the biggest-ever offshore yuan bond deal on Wednesday in Hong Kong, which Li made clear would remain the paramount centre for cultivating a yuan market outside China.
"Hong Kong can make good use of the opportunities in the yuan's growing importance...to further enhance its status as an international financial centre," Li said at a launch of the record-sized yuan bond that was attended by other Chinese officials including Central Bank Governor Zhou Xiaochuan.
Li's speech, with its specific policy announcements, along with other recent substantive speeches from him appeared to signal that China's top leaders are preparing him for a larger role ahead of his widely expected promotion to premier in 2013.
Li said foreign owners of yuan can soon buy up to 20 billion yuan ($3.1 billion) worth of yuan-denominated stocks and bonds on the mainland with the renminbi. He did not give an exact launch date for the scheme.

Russia says wants to supply all of China's gas needs amid closer energy cooperation
China and Russia signed agreements Monday to boost energy cooperation, while Moscow said it wants to supply its energy hungry neighbor with all its natural gas needs.
No dollar value was given to the agreements signed during a state visit by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, but they included documents on cooperation in coal, natural gas, nuclear energy and renewable energy.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin told reporters in Beijing that Russia is in talks with Chinese partners on plans to launch natural gas supplies to China starting in 2015, according to the state ITAR-Tass news agency.
"Russia is ready to meet China's full demand in gas," Sechin was quoted as saying in the report.
Russian state-controlled gas monopoly Gazprom said that under that agreement it will supply China with 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually for 30 years starting in late 2015. The final deal is expected to be signed next summer, Gazprom said.

China to seek bigger share of world exports: official
BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing will not relax its efforts to sell Chinese products overseas in 2010 and seek a bigger share in the global market, China's vice trade minister said on Sunday.
China, which may have replaced Germany to be the world's largest exporter in 2009, is a "big trading nation" but not yet a "powerful trading nation," vice commerce Minister Zhong Shan said.
"China's exports in 2010 will grow, and there's no doubt about that," Zhong said, declining to provide detailed forecasts.
China's exports were hit hard by the global financial turmoil, falling 18.8 percent in the first 11 months from a year earlier.
But the market share for Chinese products has increased in 2009 as sales from other countries have fallen even more deeply, Zhong told a forum at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

China
The politics of the People's Republic of China take place in a framework of a single-party socialist republic. The leadership of the Communist Party is stated in the Constitution of the People's Republic of China. State power within the People's Republic of China (PRC) is exercised through the Communist Party of China, the Central People's Government and their provincial and local counterparts. Under the dual leadership system, each local bureau or office is under the theoretically coequal authority of the local leader and the leader of the corresponding office, bureau or ministry at the next higher level. People's Congress members at the county level are elected by voters. These county level People's Congresses have the responsibility of oversight of local government, and elect members to the Provincial (or Municipal in the case of independent municipalities) People's Congress. The Provincial People's Congress in turn elects members to the National People's Congress that meets each year in March in Beijing.
